Reading Response Journals (RRJ)
Reading Response Journals should be turned in every Friday. Journals are returned by the following Monday, with feedback. RRJ should be completed accurately by the student. It is the responsibility of the student to transport their “Just Right” books & document their reading. Please check with your child to make sure that they are responding in their journals and updating their Books in Waiting (BIW).
Expectations
1. I will read the pages I decided on my monthly calendar or I will read my JRT for a minimum of 30 minutes.
2. Each day, after reading Mon – Thursday I will respond in my Reading
Response Journal. Readers are responsible for @ least 2 entries.
3. My responses should include the following
- 2 - 3 sentences that Summarizes the pages read
- Predictions (thoughts about what may happen next), What I may be Wondering about or Lingering Questions.
-Connections to life, poems, other IRA and / or other books.
4. Each entry should also include the Title of the selected text, date and pages read.

Standard: By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, at the high end of the grades 4-5 text complexity band independently and proficiently.
The goal is not to get "The Right Answer." The goal is to foster thinking, connections and wondering.
