Reader’s Workshop
Our reading workshop provides ESSENTIAL components for readers to evolve as independent meaning makers.
During our time together, learners will engage in various instructional practices.
Independent Reading: “Independent reading is a routine, protected instructional practice that occurs across all grade levels. Effective independent reading practices include time for students to read, access to books that represent a wide range of characters and experiences, and support within a reading community that includes teachers and students. Student choice in text is essential because it motivates, engages, and reaches a wide variety of readers. The goal of independent reading as an instructional practice is to build habitual readers with conscious reading identities.” https://ncte.org/statement/independent-reading/ Thus, no reading slumps…
We engage in independent reading daily, therefore it’s a practice we understand as a community of readers and embrace. Students have at least one Just-Right-Text (JRT). Students are expected to read and reflect on their JRT.
Book Club: Students are expected to participate in Book Clubs. I have created an online platform for students to collaborate, communicate and use their creative juices during and after reading a Book club book. The titles are from a variety of places to ensure rigor and engagement. Titles will be added weekly.
"To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life." - W. Somerset Maugham
#30+ is the goal!
