“I believe I have a responsibility to enrich the lives of learners through experiences together,” states Claudette Daniels, who received her Master of Arts in Education with a minor in social studies from the College of Education in 2005. She also believes that the learning environment should consist of rich literature, suitable learning opportunities and cooperative learning experiences. “This is achieved in an atmosphere where community is the life-line that intertwines everything together,” she points out.
Ms. Daniels has been successful in her efforts as demonstrated by her selection to receive the Elementary Educator Award, which will be presented to her by the
Michigan Reading Association (MRA) on March 9th at their annual conference. The award recognizes Michigan educators who demonstrate outstanding teaching and leadership in the field of Reading in five categories: Elementary Teacher, Secondary Teacher, Administrator, Adult Educator, and Teacher Educator.
The recipient must show evidence as being a strong advocate of reading, that their work is having an impact on student attitude and achievement in reading, their leadership reflects current research and practices, and that they are an outstanding role model for others.
Currently, Daniels is a 5th grade teacher of English language arts, mathematics and social studies at Doherty Elementary School in West Bloomfield, MI. She is also an adjunct assistant professor for Madonna University in Livonia, MI and will be joining the part-time faculty at Wayne State for the fall 2013 semester. “We’re thrilled that Claudette will be joining our part-time faculty,” says Phyllis Whitin, Ph.D., Language Arts and Children's Literature Program Area Coordinator and Chair of the College of Education Curriculum Committee.
As well as her work in higher education, Daniels has had considerable experience over the years as an English language arts coach/consultant, curriculum coach, and teacher. She is currently working on a doctorate in teacher leadership at Walden University (Minnesota) that she expects to complete this year. In addition to her Master of Arts at Wayne State University, she also has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with minor in sociology from the University of Michigan-Dearborn. In 2007, Ms. Daniels was a nominee for the Michigan Charter Public School Teacher of the Year award.
An active professional, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Michigan Council for Teachers of English, Michigan Association of Public School Academies, the Oakland Writing Project and the National Writing Project are some of the associations and activities in which she is involved. “The Benefits of Poetry” is the subject for her presentations as a regular guest instructor at Marygrove College and Wayne State.
